As in everyday life, the concept of “event” in journalism denotes a phenomenon of reality that occurred at a certain time in a certain place. Usually, such significant facts of public or personal life are caused by various political, economic, moral, and other reasons. What events are interesting for journalism? The answer is quite simple. First of all, events are important for journalism, which are human actions that affect the lives of other people or social processes in general.
Event Genre Definition
An event, as a journalistic genre, is among the informational ones. The main task of the journalist is to answer the audience the questions “what?”, “Where?” and when?". Without reports of current affairs, incidents and cases, there is no information journalism.
However, the event may occur as an analytical or artistic journalistic genre. Then it acquires new distinctive features and signs. In such publications, the event acts as an object of in-depth study or artistic reflection.
Event structure
The following elements form the structure of the event: event name, place, time, participants, details, causes and effects. Some of the components may be missing, as this is an individual decision of each author.
But each event has a certain "scenario" or "plot", that is, the beginning and ending. It is impossible to break off an event by telling only about the place and time; it is necessary to explain to the reader what the essence of this event was.
Differences of an event from a fact
Often an event is confused with a fact. There are a number of differences between them:
- events are often evaluated emotionally, and fact rationally;
- the event either occurred or not, and the fact may be called into question;
- it is impossible to describe how a fact occurs;
- every event is a fact, but not every fact is an event.
