"Demon" - the most mystical and legendary work of Lermontov. They say that many creative natures, in close contact with the text, begin to show strangeness. For example, illustrating the main events from the book, the artist Vrubel went crazy. They say that the plot of the work influenced him so much. So be careful reading our short retelling in parts and chapters. If you are not imbued with the atmosphere of the ominous "Demon", read the analysis of the poem from "Literaguru".
Part I
For many decades and centuries over God's land, a sad Demon flies out of heaven without purpose flying. He knew everything, and everything in this world bored him, even existence itself: the art of evil did not bring more pleasure; he did not admire the beauties of the Caucasus and Georgia, but only despised and hated.
Next, the action is transferred to the house of Prince Gudal, where preparations are underway for the upcoming wedding of his daughter Tamara, a girl of extraordinary beauty, which has not been seen. And, although the princess was cheerful and mobile, she was tormented by the idea that she would have “a fate of a sad slave, her fatherland, alien to this day, and an unfamiliar family.”
Flying past, the Demon saw grace, the slender movements of the girl, which aroused in him long-forgotten feelings - love, kindness and beauty. And for a long time he still admired her charm.
At this time, the bridegroom hurries to the upcoming wedding, followed by a long row of camels carrying gifts. But by the will of fate or by fateful accident, he was not destined to get to the goal. Passing by the chapel, he neglected the sacred tradition: to pray beside it to every traveler passing along this road. The reckoning is not long in coming: bandits attack the caravan, and the cowardly Georgians, having sensed the military superiority of the enemy, flee. And although the groom fell in a bloody battle - an accidental bullet caught up with him - a faithful steed fulfilled the last will of the owner, bringing his lifeless body to the narrowed one.
Woe in the house of Gudal. Tamara cries in her room, mourns the deceased. And suddenly she hears a magical voice calming her with her speeches: "... he [the groom] is far away, he will not recognize, will not appreciate your longing."
Part II
The girl, despite the interest of young people, can’t learn more happiness and asks her father to give her to the monastery, which Gudal agrees to. Another reason for this decision was the strange knowledge in which the demon tempted her.
Tamara leads a nun's life, full of sadness and suffering. Often she sits by the window in the hope and expectation of her mysterious savior, who appeared to her and reassured her after the death of her groom.
But the Demon is watching her, a terrible love completely captured him, tormented so much that even a tear fell from his eyes. The spirit of exile decides to enter, but the angel, the guardian of the divine shrine, blocks his path. The age-old hatred of the enemy fills the Demon, and he drives him away.
The tempter confesses to Tamara in love. The girl begins to trust him, but will reciprocate if he vows to abandon all evil. The mysterious guest swears and kisses her, to which Tamara responds with consent. The watchman passing by hears a scream, and then a moan: the meeting ends with the death of the heroine.
Tamara is buried near the family temple, built by one of the forefathers of Gudal.
The angel’s soul brings the girl to heaven, but suddenly the Demon blocks the path - “She is mine! “He shouts. Tamara's essence does not recognize him: so the tempter has changed since their last meeting. "... How he looked with an evil gaze, how full was the deadly poison of hostility." The angel drives him away, and the arrogant devil again remains alone and without love.
The church, near which the family of Gudal was buried, is visible to this day.
