(426 words) In the gray and homely house lived a lady, a widow, abandoned by her own children. She did not feel much discomfort, because around her there were always many servants who carried out all her whims. Among them, one can note Gerasim - a deaf and a little man from childhood who was distinguished by a special love for his work. The hero was brought by a lady from the village: at first he missed his stepfather's house, but nevertheless got used to it in Moscow. He lived in a small closet.
Once the lady wanted to marry the famous drunkard Kapiton Klimov to Tatyana’s laundress, hoping that marriage would change him. His alleged bride was particularly sensitive. She was especially frightened by the stately look of a deaf-mute janitor, who liked her very much. Gerasim tried, whenever possible, to give her as much attention as possible, to give gifts, to help in the work. And he was ready to make an offer, but one stupid act of the girl turns his whole attitude around her.
The butler Gavrila, having learned about the feelings of the hero and consulted with other servants of the lady, proposed to deceive Gerasim so that he would be disappointed in Tatyana. The hero could not stand the drunk, and therefore the butler persuaded the woman to walk past Gerasim as if intoxicated, so that she would become disgusted with him. And so it happened. Seeing the washerwoman drunk, the janitor decided to leave his love feelings.
Kapiton could not stop drinking, for which he was sent with his wife to a remote village. Gerasim gives Tatyana a gift - a red scarf. The lady of the heart cries and goodbye 3 times kisses Gerasim.
On the way back, a man pulls a puppy out of the water. He takes the animal home. At first, the hero’s favorite was weak and did not shine with beauty, but he began to grow stronger and changed, turning into an obedient pet with smart eyes. They became inseparable.
One day, the lady notices Mumu and asks to bring her to her. When she attempted to pet the animal, it made it clear that it could bite. The woman was indignant and demanded to rid the dog of the yard. While Gerasim worked, Stepan (footman of the boyar) sold his favorite. But at night the dog returns to the owner with a tattered rope around his neck. Now the janitor shows Mumu to no one and hides her in the closet. Many people around us often heard howls, but no one reported this to the lady. But once the dog barked loudly, because of which he woke the lady. Realizing that hiding a pet is now useless, Gerasim makes it clear that he will solve the problem on his own. He feeds the animal to the full, then goes to the river, takes the bricks, gets into the boat and sets sail from the shore. A man wraps bricks with a rope, attaches a noose and throws it over Mumu. The gaze of a pet is what Gerasim sees before closing his eyes and releasing him from his hands.
Returning to the closet, the devastated man realizes that after such a terrible event in Moscow you can’t stay. The hero returns to his native land. Before his death, he did not have a wife or a dog.
