You can read about the fact that Amos Oz is a famous Israeli writer, one of the most talented people of our time on the Internet, about his work and books. But I would like to single out “Jude” among all, to bring focus to it, although the fact that the novel is still in the top, and so says a lot. This story captures and captivates your mind from the very first lines.
This is a new look at the famous bible story. Of course, this is not the truth in the last resort and one can argue with many, but ... for some reason I do not want to argue. The story of three people who, by the will of fate, ended up in the same house, about Jerusalem, torn by Jews and Arabs, about religion. The writer masterfully weaves a reflection on the biblical plot, on the phenomenon of betrayal in the fate of the main characters. Their philosophical conversations touch upon the eternal problems of Being.
In parallel with this plot, the story of another protagonist, the eternal student, Shmuel, moves in his own way. He is so funny and sometimes childishly vulnerable that you really want to touch his curly head, say comforting words, because he managed to fall in love with an adult woman - Atalia. But at the same time, you understand that Shmuel, a person of a different kind, is just as unusual, so wise (to some extent), and shy. And here is a disabled pensioner Wald, to whom Shmuel is hired as a nurse, who is he, what secrets does he hide while living with Atalia, is she his daughter or wife, or is he the same nurse as Shmuel?
This powerful novel, a book of meditation. It is about the phenomenon of betrayal, about love, about war and peace. The author’s point of view may even be shocking, so get ready to “reflash” consciousness. Who is this Shmuel? Just a student? Maybe he is Jesus of our time? And then who is Vald? Observer? Mephistopheles? You start to ask many questions while reading this novel. And for a long time you will not be able to get this plot out of your head, returning to it again and again, trying to read between the lines, to see the very main meaning. So it’s still worth reading the story, at least in order to look at the usual plot from an unusual side for us.
