(reads about 5 minutes) Taras Bulba is an elderly Cossack, the father of two sons. His children, Ostap and Andriy, studied at the Kiev Academy. After graduation, they returned to their home. Young people, strong, strong and healthy, look embarrassed: father chuckles at their clothes. But Ostap, the eldest son, does not intend to tolerate such an attitude. Taras and his son are seriously fighting. Mother, a good old woman, calms her husband. He is glad that Ostap turned out to be a real Cossack. Taras Bulba wants to experience the youngest son, but Andriy is already in the arms of his mother.
The old Cossack convenes regiments and centurions to say: he intends to send his children to the Zaporizhzhya Sich. Indeed, for a real Cossack there is no more useful science than Sich! He wants to personally introduce the children to his friends. It is hard for the mother: it is time to part with her beloved sons who have just arrived home. Mother spends the night sitting over sleeping Ostap and Andriy, and in the morning she cannot tear herself away from them, but still finds the strength to bless the children.
Taras Bulba and his children are riding. Everyone thinks about his own, everyone is silent. Taras remembers violent youth, tears are shown in his eyes. Ostap, who became harsh and hard during his studies, cannot indifferently recall his farewell to his mother: he has a kind heart from nature. Andriy recalls not only his mother and his native home, but also a beautiful Pole. Cossack met her shortly before leaving Kiev. A desperate Andriy made his way into the Polish girl’s bedroom through the chimney. So that no one would see him, a young woman hid her guest. When the threat was over, the servant of the Poles brought Andria out into the street. Then he saw a beautiful panel in the church. How not to remember such meetings!
The road turns out to be a long one, but after arriving at the place, the sons of Taras plunge into a wild life: the Cossacks only gain combat experience during the battles, and they drink and have fun on their free days. Taras Bulba does not approve of this, because a good dare should not be spent on empty entertainment. The old Cossack comes up with how to distract the Cossacks, and persuades them to choose a new one. He decides to go to Poland.
After some time throughout the south-west of Poland, people are seized with fear of the Cossacks. Cossacks, including Ostap and Andriy, mumble in battles. One of the first cities on the way is Dubno. It has a rich treasury. Residents of the city and the garrison resist the Cossacks, but the Cossacks besiege the fortress. They burn houses, spoil the crop. Taras Bulba asks young people to wait: hot fights will begin soon.
One night, Andriy, awakened by a servant of a beautiful Polish girl, finds out that the panel is in Dubno. Her mother is dying, and a young woman is praying for help. Her beloved with several bags of bread goes to the city and, having met with the little girl, renounces the family and the Motherland. Now his Motherland is a beautiful Polish girl. Meanwhile, Poles appear in the city. They interrupt and capture the Cossacks, and the survivors decide to continue the siege. Taras Bulba learns about the betrayal of his son. Sich is also going through difficult times: those who remained in Zaporozhye were attacked by the Tatars. Half of the fighters have to return. The head of the siege army becomes Taras. He speaks of the power of camaraderie, and this speech inspires the Cossacks.
The Polish army finds out that the enemy is weak and decides to attack. Andriy is among the Poles. Cossacks, having received the order of Taras Bulba, lure him to the forest. The father kills Andria, who, in the face of death, only remembers the little panel. The Poles defeat the Cossacks, the eldest son of Taras Bulba is captured. Taras is injured and brought to the Zaporizhzhya Sich. But, barely recovering, the old Cossack turns to the Jew Yankel. Through bribery and threats, he makes him secretly send him to Warsaw. Taras Bulba hopes to buy Ostap. Hopes are not destined to come true: the son is tortured in the square. Only one exclamation escapes from his chest - an appeal to the Old Man. Father responds from the crowd and quickly disappears.
More than one hundred thousand Cossacks rise against Poland. Ataman Taras and his regiment are among them. He does not spare anyone, takes revenge for Ostap. Hetman of Poland defeated. He swears never to go against the Cossacks. Such a world does not suit Colonel Bulbu: forgiven Poles, their words, will certainly not hold back. And the old Cossack is right: the next attack by the Poles ends with the defeats of the Cossacks. Meanwhile, the Bulba regiment, without pity, destroys the Poles. After many unsuccessful attempts, the hetman regiments overtake Taras Bulba. The battle lasts four days. The Cossacks who survived leave the chase, but the colonel stops to find the lost cradle. The Poles capture him, tie him to a tree and burn him. Dying, Taras shows the Cossacks the path to the river. At the last moment of his life, he sees the old comrades moving away from the chase, and thinks about their future victories.
