Using the centuries-old wisdom accumulated by the ancestors, the people find an accurate explanation of the phenomena that surround us. For example, when a person becomes too dependent on his environment and succumbs to it, losing himself, people say that his "environment is stuck." What does this mean? Consider the examples and find out what is really the impact of the environment on the person?
A.P. Chekhov liked to describe the influence of the environment on a person. In the story “Ionych” he described an example of how Dmitry Startsev from a promising and inquisitive young man turns into a cynical, rude and boring Ionych, ordinary man and tradesman. It was the medium that played the main role in this reincarnation. The city was gray and dreary, all its inhabitants were not interested in anything except the process of consumption, routine and everyday living. They were sleepy, like flies. Among them, only the Turkins family stood out, in the circle of which the Zemstvo doctor felt good and cheerful. They seemed to him talented and witty. He especially liked the pianist Katerina, daughter of the Turkins. He even made her an offer, but she refused, citing the need for training in the capital. From that moment, Dmitry began to fade away and lose meaning in what was previously interesting to him. At the end of the story, he is disappointed even in Kotik, because she, in essence, is the same philistine, but with claims to originality. Thus, the vulgarity of a quiet and boring hinterland dragged on Startsev and changed him forever.
However, an omnipotent environment can and should resist. In A. Griboedov’s play “Woe from Wit,” Chatsky comes to Moscow and sees that society is degrading, and not developing. Everywhere all the same orders that he remembered as a child. He is trying to explain to people that they live wildly and wrongly. But they begin to convince him that he does not understand anything in life. Famus society hates enlightenment and considers it a hotbed of evil, approves of serfdom, honors careerism and turns a blind eye to vices. Realizing the futility of his attempts, Alexander leaves Famusov’s house and forever leaves the environment, which tried to devour him.
Thus, the environment really greatly affects the personality, it can even destroy it to the base and redraw in its own way. But one cannot justify those who obey the environment with this formula. Everyone can and must defend their right to identity.
